In 2018, CalPERS owned 183,434 shares of $TSLA worth $40 million. The share price at that time was $14.90.

Because of what Elon Musk did, those shares are now worth $177 each — up 11.8x. That’s $40 million stake is now half a billion.

And CalPERS is voting no on Elon’s compensation package now! Don’t do business with them. This is a completely shady organization

My mother passed away in May 2023. She lived in Hawthorne California with my father. She served at the Los Angeles School district and was a retiree drawing annuities from CaliPERS prior to her death. CaliPERS is the worst as it relates to ensuring that spouses receive survivor benefits, monetary and health insurance. My father lost his supplemental medical insurance, inclusive of prescription drug coverage, while CaliPERS "processed" his application for survivor benefits. I had to secure additional supplemental medical insurance and prescription drug coverage for my father while CaliPERS procrastinated for over 6 months. My father has kidney failure, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and dementia. It is as if CaliPERS was "stalling out" to see if my father passed away rather than paying what my mother worked so hard to earn and leave as a "cushion" for my dad. I am my parents' trustee; thus, handling their fiduciary responsibilities most expediently was paramount. CaliPERS made it almost impossible to do so.

The byzantine process strikes again. My 90 year old parent with some dementia challenges recently relocated from Virginia to California. Recently I contacted CalPERS to inform them of the address change; however, it turns out they continued to send correspondence to her VA address. I contacted CalPERS to confirm/clarify the recent address change but they would not provide me the simplest of confirmations without putting my 90 year old mother on the phone again. I informed the rep that this was a continuation of the previous call when my mother had given verbal consent. The rep advised that the verbal consent was only valid for the previous call and they would have to speak to her again. As I explained to the rep, given her cognitive condition repeated verbal confirmations over the phone (of which there have been several recently) only serve to confuse and agitate her. I politely asked to speak with a supervisor who advised the same. He provided a long explanation about protecting members against identity theft. I countered that I was only asking for confirmation that the address change had been effective and was not asking for anything specific. Plus I reminded the supervisor that they presumably had a written entry regarding the previous call that could easily corroborate the subject of my call. I advised the supervisor that this all very frustrating for caregivers and demonstrated a lack of flexibility on the part of calpers.

Been retired since 2013 but since 2017/2018 there seems to be a lack of privacy when it comes to my phone number and email address connected to my pension when I call you by phone you blurt out likely for someone else pretending to be someone they are not.
